A young wood, growing fast
Dion's Wood was landscaped in 2021, and by the end of 2022 nearly 17,000 trees and shrubs had been planted. Today it has 3km of paths winding through the new woodland, creating a haven for wildlife on the edge of Boston.
The reserve backs onto Pilgrim Hospital. A new bridge, built in partnership with United Lincolnshire Hospitals Charity, lets staff and visitors escape the bustle of a busy hospital and step into nature.
No dogs are allowed in the reserve, and visitors are asked to keep to the paths to protect the wildlife.
From open land to nature reserve
- 2021
The site is landscaped and plans for 16,000 trees and shrubs are approved by Boston Borough Council.
- December 2022
Volunteers are invited to the Boston Tree Party tree-planting day on 4 December. By year's end nearly 17,000 trees and shrubs have been planted.
- 2023
UK Shared Prosperity Fund support pays for groundworks, training, materials and a barn. Aerial photographs show the tree protectors dotting the site.
- October 2024
Dion's Wood Nature Reserve is officially opened after years of volunteer work.
- January 2025
A new bridge connects Pilgrim Hospital to the reserve.
