Boston Woods Trust volunteers have been busy removing dead and dying trees from Westgate Wood, mainly ash trees affected by ash dieback, a fungal disease. These hazardous trees are being cleared to protect walkers and dogs.
We are taking a sustainable approach. Some wood is left on site to decompose naturally, creating habitat for woodland wildlife. Surplus timber is being put to use: larger logs are available to buy by contacting Steve on 07759 087479, with the proceeds supporting Trust projects. Smaller brash will be chipped and used as mulch for new plantings at Dion's Wood Nature Reserve.
This work is part of the woodland thinning that is needed to give healthier trees room to flourish. In future we will be protecting and establishing new tree seedlings, in the hope that some will prove resistant to ash dieback, as has been seen elsewhere in the world.
