Volunteering with Boston Woods has been a valuable and rewarding experience for me. As a Sustainability and Environmental Management student, I wanted practical experience in woodland conservation, and this placement has given me exactly that.
Over the past few weeks I have been involved in tree planting, mulching, pruning, woodland thinning, and helping move timber for habitat management. I have also seen how felled logs can be reused as natural barriers to improve visitor safety. Each task has helped me understand how woodland management balances biodiversity, safety and long-term sustainability.
What I value most is learning directly from experienced volunteers like Steve and the team. I have gained confidence in using tools safely, working as part of a team, and understanding why certain trees are selectively removed to improve woodland health.
This experience has strengthened both my practical skills and my understanding of sustainable land management. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to Boston Woods and to learn from such a dedicated community.
